Trump Says He Turned Down Deal To Trade Paul Whelan For ‘Merchant Of Death’

Former President Donald Trump said Sunday that he refused to trade Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, also known as the “Merchant of Death,” for Paul Whelan.

The Biden administration traded basketball star Brittney Griner for Bout on Thursday, bringing Griner home after being detained in Russia for over nine months over cannabis cartridges in her luggage. Whelan, a former U.S. Marine, was arrested in Russia in December of 2018 and received a 16-year prison sentence in 2020 over accusations of spying.
