On Saturday, the New York Times published an in-depth opinion piece on Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), the former Speaker of the House and decades-long congresswoman. Within the piece, Pelosi reportedly blamed Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) for Democrat’s losing the House of Representatives given the Republican turnout in New York in the midterm election.
In the interview, Pelosi explained that the politicians at the top of the Democrat Party in New York failed to grasp that the issue at stake in the November election was crime. While Kathy Hochul did begin to focus on the issue in the latter part of her campaign, it was an issue that her opponent, Republican Lee Zeldin, had focused on throughout his race.
“That is an issue that had to be dealt with early on, not 10 days before the election,” Pelosi said. “The governor didn’t realize soon enough where the trouble was.”
Hochul was able to acquire the votes of 53.2 percent of New Yorkers while Zeldin got 46.8 percent of voters, a close election for the highest office in Democrat-run New York, as reported by Breitbart. For context, the 2018 New York governor’s race saw Andrew Cuomo (D) defeat Marc Molinaro (R) 59.6 percent to 36.2 percent.
Thanks to Hochul’s incompetent campaigning, however, Republicans were able to flip four seats from Democrat to Republican throughout the state, showcasing Zeldin’s down-ballot impact on congressional races.
“We flipped 4 NY Congressional seats, broke the supermajority in the State Senate, and received the most votes of any GOP candidate since Nelson Rockefeller,” Zeldin wrote on Twitter following his defeat. “Team Zeldin put in max effort every day and has no regrets. It was such an honor to lead this year’s ticket.”
Crime in New York was a consistent problem throughout 2022. Before the midterms, crime in New York City was soaring with a 10.9 percent increase in rape, a 32.4 percent increase in robbery, a 29.1 percent increase in burglary, and a 38.5 percent increase in grand larceny, as reported by Breitbart.
As the now infamous New York Times opinion piece continues to shed light into Nancy Pelosi’s feelings towards her Democrat colleagues, it is apparent that she blames Hochul for Democrat’s far-fetched effort to hold the House in the midterms. Thanks to the New York governor’s failure to recognize the problems facing New Yorkers, Republicans are now able to hold President Biden accountable and do the work of the American people.
