The lyrics in two songs of the upcoming movie “The Little Mermaid” have been modified by Disney, as confirmed by composer Alan Menken.
Composer Alan Menken, who co-wrote the original songs “Kiss The Girl” and “Poor Unfortunate Souls” with the late Howard Ashman, has revealed that the upcoming live-action remake of the beloved 1989 animated classic “The Little Mermaid” will feature several new songs and modifications to these popular old favorites.
According to Vanity Fair, Menken has disclosed that the song “Kiss the Girl,” which is performed by Sebastian the crab, has been altered to emphasize that Prince Eric would never “impose himself” on Ariel.
“There are some lyric changes in ‘Kiss the Girl’ because people have gotten very sensitive about the idea that [Prince Eric] would, in any way, force himself on [Ariel],” the composer said.
The original lyrics are: “Yes, you want her. Look at her, you know you do. Possible she wants you, too. There is one way to ask her. It don’t take a word. Not a single word. Go on and kiss the girl.”
Menken said to the outlet, “We have some revisions in ‘Poor Unfortunate Souls’ regarding lines that might make young girls somehow feel that they shouldn’t speak out of turn, even though Ursula is clearly manipulating Ariel to give up her voice.”
On May 26, “The Little Mermaid” will make its debut in theaters.
