PolitiFact Knocks Kamala Harris’ Claim She Has ‘Great Approval Ratings’: ‘We Rate the Statement False’

A remark by Vice President Kamala Harris that claimed some polls recorded great approval ratings for her was rated as false by the fact-checking group PolitaFact.

“Among more than 100 publicly released polls dating to October 2021, none shows Vice President Kamala Harris with approval ratings that outweigh disapproval ratings,” the fact-checker noted in support of its rating.

An ABC News interview conducted July 31 put the vice president in the spotlight when she made her outrageous claim in an attempt to counter low polling numbers.

Reporter Linsey Davis questioned the vice president about her sagging poll numbers during the ABC interview.

“There are reports that say that you have the lowest approval rating of any vice president,” Davis said. “I’m curious, how much role, if any, (do) you feel race and gender play in that?

”The vice president tried to push back against that narrative.

“Well, there are polls that also say I have great approval ratings,” Harris responded. “I think the point that has to be made is that there are attempts to create distractions away from the accomplishments of our administration.”

According to FiveThirtyEight, a respected polling aggregation website, Harris’ recent approval ratings are, on average, 12 points underwater. This suggests her disapproval ratings consistently surpass her approval ratings.

Specifically, FiveThirtyEight’s data highlights an average approval rating of 39.7% for Harris, with a disapproval rate of 52.3%, resulting in a net disapproval of 12.6 percentage points.

Moreover, recent polls sponsored by various media outlets and universities align with FiveThirtyEight’s findings, further evidencing higher disapproval rates than approval rates for the vice president.

PolitiFact’s examination of the data led them to rate Harris’ statement regarding her “great approval ratings” as false. They concluded that the evidence does not support her claim.

Other sources, such as Newsweek, also assessed the vice president’s claims. Their analysis, consistent with PolitiFact’s findings, noted that Harris’ approval-disapproval gap was narrower than President Biden’s.

Continuous analysis by FiveThirtyEight since October 2021 displays persistently negative approval ratings, pegged at 11.1 as of July 23, 2023. No recent polls affirm the vice president’s assertion of “great ratings.”
